Marthalyn Nyanneh

Marthalyn Nyanneh is a visually impaired young and brilliant Liberian student with aspirations of becoming a human rights lawyer. She lost her vision at age 12 due to caustic ingestion, and her father soon abandoned the family due to hardship. Despite these obstacles, she attended the School of the Blind and was promoted to 7th grade in 2016. It was a difficult chapter as she was the only visually impaired student in the class and often had to beg classmates for help with reading and translating the lessons into Braille. There were days that no one was wailing to assist her, yet, she did not allow her dream of graduating high school to perish.

Marthalyn’s situation got worse when the Ministry of Education stopped paying her tuition. Her mother couldn’t afford the tuition payments, and nobody could help her. Thankfully, in 2018, Marthlyn was awarded the Delano King Foundation Africa Orphaned Scholarship through the help of Marthalyn’s mother’s friend who happened to be a volunteer of The Delano King Foundation. Marthalyn graduated high school in October 2022. Mathalyn is thriving and she is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue her dreams.
